At first glance or even a second, Djibouti is not a very inviting-looking country.
A desert land in Africa, Djibouti´s main attractions are its beautiful beaches (the waters of Khor-Ambado and Doralé are almost the same temperature as bathwater), sea life (the curious fish who nibble at the toes of tourists are always popular) and it´s extraordinary thermal activity.
Situated on the African horn, Djibouti has often been seen as little more than a weigh-station on the way to somewhere else. Shipping from the Red Sea passes this way, but very few tourists make it a priority on their itinerary.
This is somewhat of a loss for the traveller, as Djibouti´s secrets (unlockable only with an off-road vehicle as the roads are poor or non-existent) include one of the hottest areas on the planet: Deep thermal activity sends warm springs and occasionally dangerously hot geysers to the surface, making the Afar Depression in Djibouti´s interior one of the most alien and unique places on Earth.
Also in the interior are the Djibouti locals who live as herders, traditionally nomadic people. They can be reserved but once they are warmed up, you are likely to be treated like a long-lost relative. The vast majority of Djibouti´s population is clustered in the capital Djibouti City, but those who continue to live as their ancestors have for centuries make Djibouti truly unique.
