Cleveland, Ohio sits on Lake Erie’s south shore. Cleveland was established close to Cuyahoga River’s mouth in 1796. In 1832 the Erie-Ohio Canal that links Lake Erie to the Ohio River was completed and Cleveland began a spurt of industrial growth. The area’s natural resources of coal and iron also contributed to Cleveland’s growth. Soon Cleveland was a major shipbuilding and steel center.
Numerous warehouses, mills, and oil refineries were built along Lake Erie’s shores. Many businesspeople earned a fortune in the new industries and reinvested some of their profits in building downtown Cleveland.
All this industry took a toll on Cleveland it became known for its polluted air and dull “steel town” atmosphere. Today, the city has revived and many of its neighborhoods are revitalized. Much of its industry has moved outside of the city. Modern clubs and restaurants occupy downtown’s factories and warehouses. Tree filled parks uplift the urban environment with a touch of nature.
Cleveland has numerous museums and cultural and sporting events occur regularly. The Great Lakes Science Center with a six-story Omnimax Theater is a recently built attraction. The Gateway District has several venues for live entertainment and sporting events. Visitors to contemporary Cleveland can enjoy a modern city eagerly heading toward the future.
