Houston, Texas is a large city approximately fifty miles from the Texas Gulf Coast. The Houston metropolitan area is nearly twice as large as Rhode Island. Houston is known as the “Bayou City.” It was founded on the banks of Buffalo Bayou and many smaller bayous, often shaded by cypress trees, meander through Houston. There are marshlands on the south and woodlands on the north of this humid, hot city.
Houstonians are proud of their massive city, which takes its name from the founder of the Republic of Texas, General Sam Houston. Downtown Houston sports numerous businesses, hospitals, cultural centers, and residences; the city is lively even at night because many people live in the downtown area. In recent years, many new residential and entertainment centers have been built near downtown.
The city even has underground restaurants and shops in a seven-mile long tunnel system, which was first developed some years back. Although Houston’s economy is based on industry, technology, and medicine, and not on the tourist industry, it does have many interesting attractions. The Museum District features nearly twenty museums, plus the Houston Zoo and Hermann Park, while the Theater District has world-class productions. Sports fans can enjoy the Astros, Rockets, Texans, and the Dynamos, and people interested in space exploration must visit NASA’s Johnson Space Center in nearby Clear Lake.
While you are busy exploring, stop for a bite at one of the area’s innumerable authentic ethnic restaurants; Houston has every type of food you could desire, including its own Tex-Mex cuisine.
