Expedia Flights Review 2026: Is It Really Cheaper?

What is Expedia, and how does booking flights work?

Expedia is a massive multinational travel agency that sells travel products ranging from flights to hotels, package deals, car rentals, cruises, and more. Expedia sources tickets from airlines via GDS (global distribution systems) and directly through API partnerships. It searches hundreds of airlines for your route and finds available seats across multiple cabin classes and route types.

Expedia processes the booking on your behalf and reserves the seat with your chosen airline. Once your booking has been confirmed, you will receive an email from Expedia containing the Expedia itinerary number and your airline confirmation code PNR.

Expedia will generally be responsible for customer support if you need to change or amend your ticket, although some airline bookings must be managed directly with the airline. They also run a loyalty scheme called One Key, which lets you earn and use OneKeyCash for eligible discounts on future travel.

Is Expedia cheaper than the leading flight comparison sites?

We compared Expedia with Skyscanner, KAYAK and Google Flights on five return routes from London. The screenshots were collected on 16 October 2026 for travel departing on 12 November and returning on 26 November 2026, for one adult in economy. All prices below are in pounds sterling (£).

These are displayed prices from the screenshots, not completed bookings. Some are search-filter “from” prices rather than fully selected return itineraries. We did not verify identical baggage, fare conditions or final checkout prices across every seller. Google Flights screenshots for Tokyo, Delhi, Phuket and Dubai show outbound choices priced as return trips; the return flights are not expanded. Prices can change.

1. London to San Francisco: the same flights, different prices

All four screenshots show the same direct Virgin Atlantic flights: VS19 departing Heathrow at 11:50 on 12 November, and VS20 departing San Francisco at 16:40 on 26 November. The return arrives in London the following day.

What this means: checking another comparison site revealed a lower displayed price for the same flights. However, the booking agents and fare conditions may differ. Expedia’s Economy Light fare showed checked baggage as an extra; verify the baggage and conditions on every competing offer before paying.

2. London to Tokyo: cheaper can mean a much longer journey

What this means: Google Flights displayed a one-stop return price £97 below Expedia’s one-stop “from” price. These are not confirmed identical itineraries. The £566 Google Flights option showed an outbound journey lasting 31 hours 35 minutes, including an 18-hour 15-minute layover in Beijing. Its shorter “best” option cost more. Compare journey time as carefully as price.

3. London to Delhi: compare the number of stops

What this means: the £475 results on KAYAK and Google Flights involved self-transfers and two stops on the outbound journey. They are different from Expedia’s £511 one-stop category. Restricting the comparison to displayed one-stop options narrows the gap: £498 on Google Flights versus £511 on Expedia, a difference of £13. These one-stop options may still involve different airlines, timings and ticket conditions.

4. London to Phuket: a lower headline fare may involve a self-transfer

What this means: Google Flights displayed a one-stop China Eastern option at £472, compared with Expedia’s one-stop “from” price of £525. That is a £53 difference between different displayed options. The KAYAK £473 headline fare involved self-transfers and two stops in each direction; its one-stop category started at £498. The cheapest result and the simplest journey are not necessarily the same option.

5. London to Dubai: check which airport you are actually booking

The Expedia search included Sharjah (SHJ) as well as Dubai International (DXB). The other three screenshots searched Dubai International. Their cheapest overall results therefore cannot be treated as a like-for-like comparison.

Expedia also displayed a £373 direct Air Arabia flight to Sharjah. That should not be compared as though it were a direct flight to Dubai International.

What this means: the direct Dubai International options shown ranged from £474 to £532. This is a comparison of displayed direct options, not a verified match of every flight and fare condition. Check the actual airport, transfer costs and flight times before deciding which offer is better value.

What does the new study tell us?

Expedia was not the lowest displayed option in these searches. The strongest example is San Francisco, where the selected flights matched. Across the other routes, differences in stops, airports, journey times and sellers also mattered. A cheaper search result is a starting point for checking an offer, rather than proof that it is an equivalent ticket.

This small study does not establish that one search engine is always cheapest. The lowest displayed prices were shared by different engines on some routes, and the Dubai airport mismatch prevents a fair overall winner count. Compare several search engines, then check the seller and final total.

We Tested One Multi-City Flight Route:

London to Orlando from 4th to 11th August– Orlando to Los Angeles from 11th August – Los Angeles to London 18th August

Expedia found the cheapest flight when compared to other OTA's for this multi-city flight.

In conclusion –

Our Expedia flights review reveals that the travel giant does not always come up with the best price on single route short haul and long haul flights. Comparison sites such as Skyscanner and Kayak found lower available prices on these two routes.

However, on multi-city flight routes, Expedia can sometimes land you a great deal. It beat the other agents comprehensively on our multi-city route test.

We conclude that it is always best to check a few different sites and not only Expedia to give yourself the best chance of finding the best available online deals.

What are the advantages of booking with Expedia?

Expedia is a well-known booking agent that has operated in the market for many years. It can sometimes be preferable to book with Expedia, even if it may be a little more, rather than booking a cheaper ticket from a lesser-known agency.

However, a familiar brand does not replace checking the fare rules, service fees and support arrangements. Consider the seller’s terms alongside the price.

What should you check before paying?

Check the final price and make sure your times and any layovers are correct. Make sure the cabin class meets your needs and that any required bags are included.

When should you consider another booking option?

Check whether another agency or airline, via a comparison site, has substantially cheaper tickets. If the seller is reputable, it may be a better option than booking through Expedia.

Allow for any extra baggage, airport transfers or overnight stays before deciding how much you would actually save.
