Superb is one word to describe the Caribbean island of Jamaica. Thousands of visitors are drawn each year to Jamaica’s white beaches, spectacular waterfalls, verdant mountains, peaceful sunsets, and warm people.
Jamaica was originally inhabited by the Arawak Indians and its name came from the Arawak word “Xaymaca” which means “land of wood and water.” Much of the Arawak culture was destroyed under colonial rule. In 1494, Columbus was the first European known to have set foot on the island and for the next century and a half the natives endured Spanish rule.
The British then took over rule of the island and ruled it for three centuries. Finally, in 1962, Jamaicans achieved their independence. Today, many residents of Jamaica are a blend of different ethnic groups; in colonial days, African slaves were brought to the colony and sometimes intermarried with the native Indians. Both the Africans and the Indians struggled to keep their cultural traditions alive and some of these traditions can be seen in modern Jamaica.
Jamaica was once a vacation spot for the privileged few who could afford to travel to the island. Nowadays, there are numerous resorts and hotels for all budgets on the island’s western and northern coasts. To draw more tourists, Jamaica has capitalized on its natural attractions and this has resulted in a somewhat more commercialized, touristy atmosphere than in years past; however, for the most part, Jamaica remains unspoiled and delightful. Many visitors fall in love with the island and return year after year.
