Beautiful Denver is the state capital of Colorado and is located in the Front Range of the Rockies; the thirteenth step of the Colorado State Capitol Building is exactly one mile above sea level. This is one of the many things that make the “Mile High City” unique; Denver is also unique because it is not built on a navigable water way or other source of easy transportation.
Before the advent of modern transportation most cities were built on a road, a rail line, a river, lake or ocean, but Denver sprang up after people mining for gold in the South Platte River discovered gold in Cherry Creek, a tributary of the river. In 1859, a year after the gold was discovered, General William H. Larimer arrived. Latimer claimed land on the Platte River’s east bank and began planning a city. He named the city Denver after the governor of the Kansas Territory, James Denver.
Today, Denver is a sparkling modern city. Many corporations make their home in Denver and the city is moving towards the future while relishing its past. Denver residents love their city, but they must still contend with the sometimes bitter winter weather that was always a challenge for the city’s pioneers. From December to March, Denver and its surrounding metro area is extremely cold and subject to snow. The area around Denver, especially to its west, often receives heavy snow—these unprotected sections in the Rockies’ Foothills often average almost 200 inches of snow. The city of Denver averages only one major blizzard every six years; the average snowfall is less than a half a foot deep.
If you enjoy snow, Denver can be a winter wonderland. If you don’t like snow, schedule your visit in the summer months. Winter or summer, Denver is delightful.
