Short Guide to Chad

Despite being a landlocked country in the North of Africa, the two official languages of Chad are Arabic and French. This reflects its turbulent past, being invaded, conquered and snatched from the hands of centuries´ worth of empires and nations.

Chad´s religious majority are Muslim, but the population of the country is made up of over 200 different ethnic groups. This has not been a harmonious mix and Chad continues to be the victim of ongoing political and ethnic tension

The capital, N'Djamena, is locked in the grip of gang warfare and corruption, and although this eases a little in the more rural areas, where most people survive as subsistence farmers, travellers are advised to steer clear of Chad.

Those who do visit this extremely poor country are struck by the stark beauty of this arid "Dead Heart of Africa." Although Lake Chad is the second biggest wetland on the continent, it is the north of Chad, where the Sahara laps gently at its border, that characterises this country.

For the adventurous souls who do choose to visit Chad, be advised that this is a poverty-stricken place. The locals are generally warm, inviting and curious, but desperate times create desperate people and robbery and assault are common problems.
