Guinea

Short guide to Guinea

Guinea, in Africa´s west, is an intriguing combination of unspoiled natural beauty, local traditions and a modern, more cosmopolitan population in the capital of Conakry, located, interestingly, on the island of Tombo.

Guinea is a reflection of a European colonial African history and shares borders with Sierra Leone, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Liberia and Côte d'Ivoire. French is the main language spoken here although the majority religion is Islam, further illustrating the fluid and dynamic evolution of Guinea.

The inhabitants of the capital city are progressive: English is more widely spoken and Conakry is known for its parties, live music and outward-looking culture.

The Guinea hinterland is somewhat different. Life is lived at a slower pace here, farming is the norm and French is usually the only language spoken. Here you will meet with friendly locals who are more than willing to stop and pass the time with you (providing you speak French!) before you continue on to experience some of Guinea's exquisite scenery.

The three great African rivers come from Guinea (the Niger, the Gambia and Senegal) and the Highlands of Mount Nimba is a Mecca of sorts for the dedicated trail walker. Guides are available for those who are a little new to the sport.

Descending from Dalaba, the town set high enough in the mountains to make you light-headed, you can head to Cape Verga to relax on the white sandy beaches before having a dance or two in the all-night town of Faranah.
