The biggest city in all of the three Canadian territories, Whitehorse has a population of just over 20,000. As capital of the Yukon in northern Canada, it’s home to 33 percent of the territory’s entire population. The city was awarded the National Civic Lead for the wondrous beauty of its natural parks and truly captivating landscapes.
Described as ‘pearls on a string’ by some, the city has large vacant and often hilly strips of land between its service subdivisions, residential and industrial areas. The main road, The Alaska Highway, stretches beyond the city to reach even more subdivisions. Highway 1A, branching off from the Alaska Highway, leads to Two Mile Hill Road, then onto 4th and 2nd Avenues before turning onto the Robert Service Way which goes straight into downtown, Riverdale and the Marwell Industrial Area. Other smaller residential areas as well as recreational installations can be reached by way of Mayo Road, Range Road and Hamilton Boulevard.
White Horse Rapids, said to resemble the flowing mane of a white horse, gave the city its name, though some maintain the rapids was named for a First Nations Chief who died while attempting to cross the raging rapids. The rapids have since been buried under Lake Schwatka due to the erection of a hydroelectric dam in 1958
