Fiji is a proverbial paradise situated in the South Pacific Ocean. Enjoying a hot tropical climate, over three hundred different islands and miles of beautiful coastline, when wanting to escape the hectic schedules of busy city life, Fiji offers a welcome refuge. A couple of thousand miles from the land of Australia, Fiji was once known as being the home of feared tribes with cannibalistic tendencies.
In huge contrast with today, the Fijian people have cultivated a reputation of peace and serenity and enjoy a very laid back attitude to life. With flowers on their heads and an inevitably large smile, the locals are sure to leave you with a very warm feeling towards them.
One thing you will notice upon your arrival in Fiji is the abundance of flowers almost everywhere on the islands. Palm trees, tropical jungles and sparkling blue water. Fiji is truly a land where people come to escape from it all. Numerous back to nature activities are available for the tourist or visitor to undertake. Enjoy swimming side by side with exotic sea life, take a scuba diving lesson, explore the amazing abundance of coral or practice your surfing skills against the legendary waves found in this region.
The main island in Fiji is Viti Levu. Numerous flights from major international airports fly here daily, and from there it is very easy to transport yourself to the various other islands and resorts present in the area. If wanting to engage in more materialistic pursuits rather than just laying back and relaxing, then the city of Suva is the place for you. With numerous world-class shopping venues and a very vibrant nightlife, this is the centre for the hip and trendy on the island of Fiji.
There is a large minority of Indians in Fiji and the actual official languages of the country are Fijian and Hindi. English, however, is heavily utilised in the tourist centres of the country.
Being a tropical country there are a number of foreign health risks one should be aware of before planning a trip to Fiji. Typhoid and diarrhoea are fairly modest risks and every possible care should be taken with food and drink to ensure that it is clean and well cooked. It would be a good practice to limit yourself to drinking water out of a bottle and be careful to cover up any cuts on your body quickly. There are areas where mosquitoes are a real pest and can carry the debilitating dengue fever in certain seasons. Again, whilst on your trip to Fiji, it would be wise to carry with you some form of a repellant and try to ensure covering an adequate amount of your body.
The economic situation in Fiji is not the best and there is a fair amount of unemployment in the country. As a result, crime rates are high in certain areas and vigilance should be maintained at all times. Be particularly careful in busy areas of the city, where organised gangs of pickpockets and thieves are known to operate.
