With the constant presence of film-crews in and around the city, it’s not hard to see how Vancouver came to have the nickname ‘Hollywood North’. This sizzling young city brings together the wonders of nature and the practicalities of modern life. In 1792, Captain George Vancouver sailed into Burrard Inlet and is responsible for the city’s name. Little more than a struggling town a hundred years ago, Vancouver now has a booming population of over two million. The sheen of modern towers wrapped in glass rise through the splendid backdrop of spectacular mountains topped with glistening snow, making Canada’s third largest city an invigorating place to visit.
Stanley Park, largest city park in Canada, is as large as the whole of Vancouver’s downtown area. With enticing forests to stroll through and beautiful lakes dotting the hundreds of acres, it is visited by locals and tourists. A stone seawall protects the park from erosion and entices pedestrians and cyclists with its pathway that extends past the boundaries of the park. You may also take a tour on a trolley-bus, take a romantic ride in a horse-drawn carriage or spend some time at the Vancouver museum, all within the park. Cobblestone streets give Gastown its well-deserved historic air as well as the steam-powered clock. This old-time atmosphere is seamlessly blended with many souvenir shops and art galleries. A change of pace can be had at nearby Chinatown with its classical Chinese gardens and authentic Chinese restaurants. If serious shopping is more to your liking, Robson Street has much to offer and you may even run into a celebrity.
