Somalia is not the most highly recommended tourist destination. In fact, it is highly recommended that travellers stay away.
Given its recent plunge into war, and the fact that even aid workers are now barred from entering, Somalia is now little more than a rubble-filled battlefield. The country is now essentially three states operating within one country: Puntland in the north, a splinter state (Somaliland) in the middle and Somalia proper in the south. Since the early nineties, since ethnic and political tensions ripped Somalia apart, Somalia proper is the only one of the three that has managed to put together some semblance of government and stability.
Unfortunately, this is relative: The entire region is almost completely lawless – in fact, Mogadishu, Somalia's capital, has the dubious distinction of being the most lawless city in the world. The city is a wasteland of violence, gangs and crumbling buildings that once housed the administrative and commercial workforce of Somalia.
Because of the ban on all but the most persistent of visitors, the locals are now the only people able to enjoy Somalia's pristine coasts and scenic grandeur. Although the country is essentially a desert, the culture and cuisine of Somalia are said to be enchanting, and eventually will get to a point of peace and development that means outsiders will once again be able to share in the thrill of experiencing the Neolithic rock paintings, scuba diving opportunities, mountains and more than three thousand kilometres of coastline littered with white beaches and turquoise blue waters.
