Travel Savings Quiz: The Questions

Q1 — Do you use incognito browsers when booking flights?

  • Every time – in fact, I’ll use multiple computers, all with different browsers, to compare prices
  • No, but I do delete my cookies in between visits
  • I might look at flights on my phone before booking on my computer
  • Never – I don’t do anything in particular, just go to the site and hit ‘buy’

Q2 — How long will you spend comparing hotels before making a booking?

  • I’ll genuinely spend days on it – I might look at 100 before making a call
  • Several hours, over one or two sessions
  • I’ll give it a couple of hours but I won’t go mad
  • I usually just book the first one that has a decent pool

Q3 — You’re about to pull the trigger on a flight booking, but someone texts you with a discount code for a rival airline – what do you do?

  • Fire up another laptop with a VPN and check it out to see how the price compares
  • Get another browser up on the computer you’re using to check
  • Have a quick scan on your phone just to make sure the price difference isn’t too much
  • Just carry on with the booking you’re already making – too much faff to change it

Q4 — How many different airline loyalty schemes are you part of?

  • At least half a dozen, and I know exactly how many points I’ve got on each
  • Three or four but I’m not sure what I’m eligible for
  • One, maybe? I don’t remember
  • None – I always decline the opportunity to join them

Q5 — You get to the airport and your suitcase is too heavy – what do you do?

  • Wouldn’t happen – I know exactly the allowance for each airline
  • I’d divide the contents among other people in my party’s cases
  • I’d probably end up paying the extra baggage fee
  • I’d open up my case and chuck a load of stuff away

Q6 — You need a new perfume – when do you get it?

  • I’ll wait until I’m going away to take advantage of duty free
  • I’ll buy it abroad – with travel rates, it can be cheaper
  • I’ll get someone to buy one for me for my birthday or Christmas
  • I’ll just go into my nearest Boots and pick some up

Q7 — How many websites do you compare before booking your flight?

  • I’ll compare multiple flight comparison sites, travel agents and airline websites directly.
  • I’ll just use one comparison site
  • I’ll probably just go to my usual travel agent
  • I won’t compare sites, I’ll take the first option Google gives me

Take the quiz to get your 'Savvy' score - here is a sneak peak at the true answers:

  • Booking in ‘incognito’ mode could save you money according to some as it sheds your browser history so you can book online without being tracked by airlines who might raise your price each time you check. In our experience though this is completely untrue.
  • A VPN (Virtual Private Network) can improve online privacy by masking your IP address and changing your apparent location, but it does not make you anonymous or prevent all tracking. Some say using Incognito and a VPN together saves you cash, but this is not a reliable way to get cheaper flights.
  • It's always best to compare hotels before you travel and always read the reviews
  • Joining airline loyalty schemes means you can redeem miles or points for money off flights.
  • Always check the baggage allowance for your airline before you travel - they’ll charge you extra if you over-pack!
  • Duty-free items are not always a better deal, so it’s best to compare prices before you buy
  • It is always best to check multiple comparison engines, travel agents and airlines for each route. You can save up to 20% by doing a detailed comparison.
