Google Flights is one of the biggest and most-used flight search engines in the world. It's a meta-search engine that aggregates fares from multiple airlines and travel agents to find you the best deal.

We tested and analyzed how its platform has evolved from 2012 to the current 2026 version, and compared it with other leading aggregators to see which performs best.

What is Google Flights?

Google Flights is a powerful, lightning-fast meta-search engine, or flight aggregator. Rather than acting as a travel agent, it searches over 300 travel partners to show you the best prices.

Once you find the best price, you are shown a list of booking providers you can select to complete your booking.

What’s New With Google Flights in 2026?

Google Flights has added a few updates since our original review in 2012 (near the end of this article).

The most important ones are the inclusion of many more booking partners, the introduction of a ‘cheapest price’ tab, and a new AI-powered flight discovery section.

Expanded booking partners

Since we first reviewed Google Flights in 2012, they have added many more booking partners. Some of these partners may be less reputable than others, so review them with an independent third party before spending your money. Google Flights does not review each booking partner internally, so users must check reviews on independent third-party websites.

The Cheapest tab

Google Flights categorizes your flights into two distinct sections. They show you the ‘best flights', which combine convenience and price, and the ‘cheapest flights’, which offer the lowest price but may be less convenient, with longer stopovers.

A cheaper result isn’t necessarily a better result. Check whether you’re accepting a self-transfer, separate tickets, an airport change or a less familiar booking provider in exchange for the saving.

Google Flight Deals — AI-powered flight discovery

Google launched AI-Powered Flight Deals in 2026, which lets users describe a trip naturally—something like “a week somewhere warm in November, nonstop from London”—and uses AI plus Google Flights pricing data to suggest bargains.

The feature has expanded to more than 200 countries and territories, and supports more than 60 languages.

Google defines a deal using historical pricing; its help documentation says it can highlight qualifying “Savings Deals” when prices are at least 20% below what is typical for a comparable trip.

AI Mode flight price tracking

On 27 August 2026, Google announced that users could set up Google Flights price tracking directly through AI Mode by describing the trip conversationally. Google says the feature uses prices from 300+ airline and travel-site partners and is available in more than 180 countries and territories, subject to regional availability.

You will notice that whenever you search for a route on Google Flights, the date calendar automatically populates with prices for different dates. This can be handy when you have flexibility in your trip itinerary. The best part is that it updates when you apply filters.

Another handy Google Flights feature is the price graph calendar. Select the date grid or price graph option, and Google Flights will open a table or chart, making it easy to see the best day to depart and the best date to return.

Price insights

The Price insights feature on Google Flights is handy if you want to know whether you are paying above or below average for your flight. Click View price history to open a chart showing fares tracked over the last 60 days, marked as low, typical, or high.

Google can email users when tracked fares change significantly and can also warn when prices appear likely to rise.

Explore

The Explore feature is one of its most powerful functions. Instead of entering a specific destination, you can type in ‘Anywhere’. You will then be taken to an interactive map of the world, where you can see the cheapest routes flying out of your airport. You can also add multiple departure points and filter results by price, stops, and airline.

Alternative airports

When you search on Google Flights, it will immediately flag an alternative airport if another airport offers a better or cheaper flight.

Baggage filters

You can add a carry-on bag in the Google Flights filters; however, they don't offer a checked-bag option on routes other than domestic flights, so you'll need to add it when you book on the airline's or OTAs' site.

How Google Flights has changed since 2012

Since 2012, Google has added numerous new features that make finding affordable airfare much simpler. These include an AI deal finder, the cheapest flights tab, an advanced explore map and a much larger array of travel partners.

However, when it comes to the question of ‘is it the cheapest ’, it doesn't always quite deliver. In some instances it will, whilst on other occasions another aggregator will beat it.
